Car Air Filters

The cars air filter is an extremely important part to your car because it maintains many parts of your car system by keeping these systems completely clean by keeping them free of dirt. If the cars air filter does not work properly and dirt is allowed to enter your car system problems might start occurring. Car maintenance can be difficult enough thanks to normal wear and tear without having to worry about problems that can be prevented by having a working air filter. For this reason it is extremely important that you keep an eye on your air filter so that you can replace it when necessary. Replacing an air filter is one thing that can be very easy to do once you are taught and doing this replacement yourself will save you time and money.

If you do not know how to judge when your air filter needs to be replaced then try to make sure you change your air filter based on mileage or a set time frame. It is recommended that you change your cars air filter every 15,000 miles it is driven. If you do not drive your car often or far then make sure that you change your cars air filter once every year. Some people who live and drive in extremely dusty or dirty areas (high pollution levels) might want to change their air filters even more often.

When you feel it is time to check your cars air filter, especially if you live in a dirty area where changing should be done more often, check the filter to see how it is holding up. Most air filters are located under the hood in newer cars. The cars air filter in a newer car is usually rectangular in shape and near the radiator or the fender wells.

If you are not sure where the air filter is have a look at your cars owner manual or even ask the workers at an auto repair shop the next time you go in to buy some windshield wiper fluid or to get an oil change. Once you have located the air filter remove it and use a flashlight to shine through the air filter. If the light shines through pretty clearly then your cars air filter is usually still good. If you cannot see the light or the air filter looks blatantly dirty it is time for a change.

To remove the filter, if you haven't already done so to check, you will usually have to open a compartment or unclasp the air filter from the area it is secured in. If you have an older car changing the air filter can be little bit more difficult. These air filters are often found near the actual engine area and are screwed in. In most cases all you have to do is removing the cover using the screw driver so that the air filter can be removed and replaced with a new air filter. In a few cars there are additional clamps or clips that must be removed as well.

Finding new air filters is not usually that hard. Most stores that sell auto supplies carry a variety of air filters and most car owner manuals will state what sort of air filters and other parts are needed to help maintain the car. If all else fails the car manufacture or dealership should be able to help you find out what type of air filter is needed and will probably even be able to tell you where to find the air filter.

Installing a Performance Air Intake Kit Will Make Your Car Better

One of the easiest ways to add more power to your car is to install a performance air intake kit. A performance air intake kit is designed to reduce the temperature of the air entering a vehicle to maximize the engine's power. This basically means that a car will perform better, save on fuel economy, and produce a sweet sounding intake tone. Not the peewee sounding exhaust noise but the deep, bad(butt) sound. In addition to that, a performance air intake kit will improve the look of an automobile's engine bay. Fortunately, installing one of these intake kits is not a difficult job either; you can easily do it yourself. The following will cover the advantages of installing a performance air intake kit.

The first benefit is that one will receive more power from their car. Denser, colder air acts like food for your engine. The lower the temperature of the air entering the engine, the more efficient it runs. Car engine's love cold air like a stripper loves dollars bills. By installing a performance air intake kit into your car, you will receive more horsepower and torque as your engine taps into power that would otherwise go to waste.

The second advantage of a performance air intake kit is better fuel economy. There is a mistake that some make when they discuss performance parts. Many power enhancements actually increase fuel mileage- not reduce it. An efficiently operating engine will eat up less gas. A performance intake system will make your engine happier and run better.

The last benefit of installing a performance air intake kit into your car will provide optimum overall sound and it will add a great look to your car as well. A performance air intake kit adds a throaty intake tone that everyone will notice and compliment. When looking at the engine bay, seeing a performance air intake kit will please the eye and make people say- "That's ill yo!" Adding a performance air intake kit to your car has a number of benefits and they are all great.

How to Install a AEM V2 Cold Air Intake

Many car tuners are do it yourself enthusiast. In this article we will give you a general idea on how to install your brands new AEM V2 cold air intake. The AEM v2 intake is the top of the line cold air intake and will increase your cars horsepower anywhere from 2-5 hp.

Installing the cold air intake may seem like a big feat to some, but its really quite simple. To start off open your hood and get accustom to your engine bay. You should fine a big black box that connects to your intake manifold. This is your aem air filter. You need to remove this, by unscrewing any screws that hold it in place. Then, you unclamp the tube that connects to your intake manifold.

You should then be able to remove your OEM air intake. Make sure to disconnect any wires that may be connect from your old air intake to the engine. On most sport compact cars, there is a plug that plugs from the OEM air intake to the intake manifold. You will want to remove this plug and pull out the whole air box. There may be additional pieces of the air box in the engine bay. These also need to be removed too.

After the OEM air intake is removed, take your new AEM cold air intake of the box and get acquainted with the pieces. There should be a air filter, intake tubing, some clamps, some hoses, and some screws. Since it's a cold air intake, you want to install from outward to inward. This means, that since your air intake will be outside your engine bay, you need to install this first.

Grab the cold air intake tube, and run it through the hole that runs into your wheel well. Now grab your AEM air filter and connect it to the tube, so the air filter is in the engine bay. On some cars, you may have to remove the front bumper, or most likely, the mud guard in your wheel well. Screw the clamp down so your AEM air filter is securely connect to the AEM V2 intake tube. Now you can put your bumper or your mud guard back on.

Now moving back to the engine bay, its time to hook the AEM intake tube to the intake manifold. Since, the AEM V2 cold air intakes are designed specifically for each car model, there should be no custom work needed. Grab a clamp and connect the other end of the intake tube to the intake manifold. Your AEM V2 Cold air intake is pretty much installed. Now, you grab the hose that came with the AEM intake and connect one side to the inlet on the intake tube. The other side connects to the intake manifold. There should be an open inlet from the OEM intake, right by where the intake tube connect to the intake manifold.

You are almost done! Now, all you have to do, is disconnect your battery for 5 minutes to reset your ECU. Now your car knows that you have installed a high performance car and it will adjust its air intake/fuel ratio. Just start your car and make sure everything runs smoothly.

Installing a AEM V2 Cold Air Intake is very simple and I hope that this has helped you install your high performance AEM product.

Original Parts VS Aftermarket Parts

Many debate whether or not original automobile parts or aftermarket parts are better when a vehicle must be repaired. Some may believe that the original parts are better since they are made by the manufacturer, but others claim that the aftermarket parts are equal to or even better than the original parts. So which is it? Is it just a matter of opinion or is there fact to either one of these claims?

There may be one factor that affects whether or not a repair shop may use the original or aftermarket parts and that is state regulation. Each state has different regulations regarding which parts can be used on a vehicle. This is because the state regulates the insurance industry and if the state allows, the insurance company you are with may allow the use of aftermarket parts, which could play to your advantage. You may or may not be asked permission, depending on your state. Then again, there are situations in which you can make the decision yourself, especially if the insurance company is not involved.

Original parts

It is fair to say that some original parts are up to par and some are not. Many times a vehicle breaks down because of something that is wrong with the original parts. This is also true when a recall occurs. This may deter an automobile owner from using the original parts if they have that choice. If it is a recall that is leading to the replacement of the part, the dealership making the repair or replacement will use what they are instructed to use.

But when you go to a local parts store, you are usually given options as to which parts to use. They will more than likely quote you the price of an economy part that will save you money, the original part that is just like the part you are replacing, and a more expensive part that costs more because it is of a better quality. Some people may go for the original part since it was made by the manufacturer, but is that always the best way to go?

Aftermarket parts

Let's look at the other two parts: the economy part and the part that is more expensive. These are aftermarket parts. There are many aftermarket parts at the economy price that perform well and sometimes this performance can be equal to or better than the performance of the original. Then there is the more expensive aftermarket part, which more than likely performs better than the original. You can possibly get a longer life out of that aftermarket part than you can the economy part or the original. It may cost more, but the cost is usually not a significant amount more than the original part.

What it comes down to is that the price difference becomes worth it because you will not have to replace the part as quickly as you did the original part on the car. These parts also frequently come with guarantees or lifetime warranties so that you can have the part replaced for free if it prematurely fails.

The benefits

So it is fair to say that purchasing an aftermarket part is more cost-effective than buying the exact same part that failed. Unless modifications have been made by the manufacturer to keep that part from failing in the same way, you can count on the part failing in the same manner as it did the first time. You can save yourself many headaches by investing in the aftermarket part that has made improvements on the failures of the original.

Our Aftermarket Parts department has access to over 15,000 body repair parts and specialty parts for domestic and imported cars and trucks. We also offer quality used auto parts and accessories.

How to Change Your Car's Filters

It may seem silly, but changing your car filters on a regular basis can have a significant impact on engine life and performance.

Here in Los Angeles, where we have our editorial offices, the premises have a saying: "Never breathe air you can not see." While the editors of Edmunds.com, a daily walk through this slump of particulates and CO2 emissions in the suction and nitrous oxide, our cars have the advantage of air filtration.

There is something wrong with this picture? Should we will not be the most masks on their faces and a program of regular maintenance to change the filter?

But nooooo. We are too busy driving cars of the press, taking notes, shooting pictures, opening doors, hoods hack, racing through the feet, agreeing to come here-looking marriageable young actresses that I think actually own these vehicles, taking more notes, running to the car wash, dashing across town in late press conference, attending racing school ... aaargh!

And that's not the middle of it. As such water. We are actually supposed to drink these things? THE tap water has the consistency of Quaker State; looks like scum swamp. Where is our water filter? Can not we have a cup of nature without the best things floating in it? After all, our cars have fuel filters, have a system to eliminate noxious particles. Where's ours?

Well, as you can see, anything that takes in fluids or air this means, whether man or machine, there should be a way of separating the good from the bad, taking only the benefits that the mechanism and leaving the rest behind.

Our cars. They are called filters - namely, air filters and fuel filters. True, which require regular care, however, this is one of the simplest and least expensive - and most important - maintenance procedures you can perform to his car.

What we'd like to do in this month's column How is that you walk through a filter change base. It is not going to take time, saves money, and sends his car on the road fresh and renewed. A clogged air filter or fuel can cause poor performance, cost to the fuel pump, and shorten engine life. This simple procedure against the guards.

How often should you do this? A good rule of thumb is once or twice a year, or about once every 12000 miles.

Change the air filter

At least, learn to change their own air filter. It's quick and easy and saves money.

How so? Well, I think: When was the last time they went to Quick Lube-N-Tune took place on mechanical and hit him with "Hey Bud, you need a new air filter." After you wink and see how it adds to the bill. How much? $ 7.99? $ 9.99? $ 12.99? Heck, even we have seen $ 14.99.

There is an old joke about the creation of the universe with the punch line: "Well, somebody had to pay retail." Maybe so. But not necessarily.

One of our jobs here at Edmunds.com is to empower you. Do not let them stick to you. Learn to say "no" - there is no law against it. Simply say, "I'm going through now," or "Thank you, I will see it," and go home after the oil change and carry out this procedure you - if, indeed, really needs to be done.

First, park your car in the shade and pop the hood. Prop up to what you do not hit in the head, and then let the engine cool for a few minutes.

While cooling, to be their tools. You will need very few for this procedure - you can probably do it with a butter knife. If by hand, however, seizing two medium-sized screwdrivers, one standard and one Phillips, and head back to the car.

The air filter is usually enclosed in a black plastic casing near the center of the top engine (sometimes, especially in large vehicles, were out on the side). Must be the largest metal can not see the assembly, the size of a breadbox. Encounter? Good. Now, open it.

How? Well, most of them are kept together by a pair of large metal clips on the side. Slide the butter knife or flat-headed screwdriver between the casing and the clip and pry the shell open. Sometimes you find that was held together with several long screws, in which case you'll have to unscrew to get into the filter. (Many of the older cars used a bottle of cleaner air held within a circular black. It's like a giant donut that is at the top direct-center engine.)

Anyway, crack open. You will find the air filter inside. It is usually bright yellow or orange or red, the better to see the collection of dirt.

Pull it out. It is generally flat, elongated, usually about a foot long and six inches wide by two inches high. It is made of strands of paper with rubber edges along the bottom to seal against the deck.

Now, let's check for cleaning. Keep it up. Bend back, so the role of mountain ranges as the filter flutter the pages of a book, and look inside the cracks. Do you see a lot of accumulated dirt and grime? Now will be held at arms length and look straight ahead. It is the dirty orange or yellow paper mainly in the center? If so, we will replace it. Not much - just the replacement costs about five dollars. Remember that $ 14.99 price Quik-Lube place? This is where you get even.

Close the case. Then put the old air filter in a plastic bag from the supermarket. You will want to bring with you to compare the old with new and sure to get the right replacement, so throw in the car and go cleaning.

Incidentally, it's okay to drive a car short distances without an air filter (something you can not do and who lacks a filter fuel).

This is what you need to buy at the store auto parts:

* New air filter
* New fuel filter
* The new board (s) for the fuel filter - which usually come with, but ask

When you return, go ahead and install the new air filter. Seal and until it has finished.

Replacing the fuel filter

This is a bit more problematic procedure, since the pursuit of thing can be half the battle. It is usually located near the university engine near the air filter, although sometimes with more modern cars, is actually incorporated into the fuel tank and is a job best suited to your mechanic.

First, if the value of his life, the extinction of any material smoking while doing this procedure.

Secondly, for better access, remove any oversized, plastic coverings at the top of the engine. They usually come with a wide flat head.

Now looking for the fuel line, coming from the rear of the car. It is more or less the same diameter as a finger-thick, and be soft and pliant, not a tree Carbide. It enters the fuel filter on the back of the vehicle.

Encounter? Well, now grab a couple of pencils # 2. You also need several different sizes of screwdrivers, both Phillips and flat head, and a small set of ratchet.

This is what we are going to do. When you work the line fuel filter free, you're going to jam the pen in the free end to keep gasoline from spreading throughout the engine (and yourself).

The line will usually be guaranteed to fuel the fuel filter with a little clip. The work is complemented with a screwdriver - usually a Phillips - and to stop difference with the stylus. (Sometimes you need an object larger diameter than a pencil. You need to be resourced here, we do not know what you have lying around in his junk drawer at home. One of the first pencils first grade is perfect .)

After you've connected the fuel line, you can set to work removing the fuel filter. It is typically guaranteed for the engine with a pair of small screws. Find the right size socket and remove the filter. It will have a hose coming from the other end (this goes for the engine) in order to eliminate this the same way as they did others, and connect with the rest of pencil.

Compare the new filter with the filter of age, and make sure the position in the same way, so that the fuel is flowing smoothly. Sometimes there is an arrow in the filter showing you that the direction of the flows of fuel.

Put the assembly together with the inverse of how you understand separation. Before doing so, however, take a quick look at the new filter.

You note that there are two metal (or plastic) comes from wells where the filter attach hoses. They have little nubs or ridges around the edges. Be sure to slide the engomado lines in the filter as in the past nubs as you can get.

Also, pay special attention to the clamps on each end of the filter. Position among nubs and the body of the filter. Then get snugged them good and tight (but not so tight as to strip the screw), to avoid leaks.

One last thing. If hoses are increasingly frayed and fragile, make a mental note to buy some new hoses next time you change the filter. If you're really bad, replace at this time.

After mounting everything and safe, run the engine for a few minutes. Inspect hoses and connections to ensure that no fuel exhaust.

That's it.

Remember, next to change your oil and oil filter, replacing its air and fuel filters on a regular basis is the most important act of maintenance can make for your engine. Do it, and thank you for your engine give many thousands of trouble-free miles.

K&N Million - Mile Air Filter

K & N makes the dropout replacing air filters that can be cleaned rather than replaced. K & N claims in the re-usable air filter saves money and waste disposal, and that their filters are less likely to restricting the air as it dirty. (Restricted airflow causes a reduction in engine power and fuel economy.) Retail prices range from $ 35 to $ 80 + depending on the application.

How does the K & N filter?

Air Filters 101

Engines produce power of provoking a mixture of fuel and air. The air filter's job is to filter out particles of dirt while allowing a free flow of air to the engine can "breathe". A filter clogged with dirt will cause loss of power and fuel economy.

Most air filters used his role as a filter medium. Most cars require the filter to be checked or changed every 10000 to 20000 miles; when the filter is dirty, is thrown away and replaced.

How is K & N different?

K & N filters use an oiled cotton filter medium. K & N claims that its filters not only allows the flow of fresh air when clean, but they can absorb dirt without limitation as filter papers. When the filter gets dirty, not pull away, clean and re-oil. K & N estimates that the cleaning interval is about 50000 miles (longer for less dust). The filter is served with a K & N cleaning kit ($ 9 to $ 12 Compare Prices retail), which is good for 5 to 10 uses. K & N said its filter will last for the lifetime of the vehicle, with its filters and covers 10 years and millions of miles warranty.

Benefits of K & N filter

Benefits for the environment

Paper air filters can not be recycled; you have to throw the whole thing away. The K & N filter itself lasts the life of the car, and cleaning kit used cartons and plastic bottles that can be recycled.

Cost benefits

The cost savings will depend on the application. I tried K & N filter in our 1996 Honda Accord. The retail price for K & N filter is approximately $ 43. (My test sample was provided free of charge by K & N) filter papers ranging from $ 19 to $ 31. Honda recommends a change to filter 15000 miles, so for a do-it-yourself like me, K & N filter and a cleaning kit will take care of itself after two changes, or about two years. For people who have their car serviced by the dealership, the installation of a K & N could pay for itself in a single shift.

In the real world benefits

This is the reaility: I am not as careful as I should be on changing my cars' air filters. By the time I get around it, is the filter is usually clogged with dirt - and that means more to me to pump gas. The K & N longer service intervals means that you can blithely ignore that, without harmful effects.

Other issues with the K & N filter
How well does it filter?
Several readers have responded with concern for the K & W's ability to effectively filter out dirt air compared to filter papers. After all, protecting the engine is why engines have an air filter to begin. K & N insists that its filters are rigorously tested to meet standards filtration OEMs.

The expert opinion: Not an issue

I discussed the issue with the owner of an engine rebuilding shop reputation. In his experience, engines that have suffered from premature wear are those in which the filters are routinely ignored. He saw no significant difference in wear on the engines that filters are cleaned or changed regularly, regardless of their type. (Running personally K & N filters in their own cars.)

Does the K & N increased engine power?

Many enthusiasts use K & N filters because their increased airflow increases power, especially in certain applications. If replacing a clogged air filter certainly see the difference. My wife Robin and I did not see a significant increase in power, what he says, is not expected to - K & N sells a kit of special admission for owners of Understanding like us who want more power. (We will be a test in the near future.)

Conclusions What I like about the K & N filter:

* Easy installation - same as a paper air filter
* A task less maintenance to worry about
* Benefits for the environment - less waste produced
* Potential for better long-term fuel economy

What I do not like the K & N filter:

* High initial purchase price

Verdict:

A useful purchase for most car owners - even if the cost benefits are not huge, the benefit to the environment is important.

reusable air filters

Your car's air filter should be changed yearly or approximately once every twelve thousand miles, depending on your manufacturer's recommendations. Unfortunately, disposable air filters are worsening an already big environmental problem: overflowing landfills. Learn what you can do to help the environment as well as achieve some great side benefits by installing reusable air filters in your vehicle.

If you plan on keeping your car for at least 100,000 miles you can count on having to change your air filter from 8 to 10 times. When you buy a new filter the old one must be thrown out and all the packaging from the new filter is tossed as well. Over the life of your vehicle, you are adding a lot of needless trash to landfills.

An alternative to disposable air filters are reusable ones that can be periodically washed, dried, and put back in your car. Priced from 2 to 5 times higher than disposable air filters, in the long run you will get your money back and then some. Indeed, some reusable air filters have a lifespan of 500,000 miles, much longer than what most people will put on their cars.

Reusable air filters are made of materials that allow your car to "breath" more efficiently thereby producing beneficial side effects such as improved fuel economy, increased horsepower, and better torque.

In all, installing reusable air filters make perfect sense. Shop your local retailer or save even more money by shopping online with a reputable auto supply wholesaler.

77-1516KP K&N High Flow Performance Kit

77-1516KP K&N High Flow Performance Kit

Product Description

Built for performance and show utilizing the highest quality components, the K&N 77 Series High-Flow Performance Kit is a free-flowing mandrel-bent aluminum tube induction system designed for Trucks and Sport Utility Vehicles. 77-Series intakes have a polished aluminum finish. K&N intake systems replace your vehicle's restrictive factory air filter and air intake housing. K&N intakes are designed to dramatically reduce intake restriction as they smooth and straighten air flow. This allows your vehicle's engine to inhale a larger volume of air than the OEM air filter assembly. More air means more usable power and acceleration throughout the engine's RPM range. The filters on these kits are washable and reusable. Most of our intake kits are relatively easy to install using tools commonly available (see installation instructions).

57I-9002 K&N 57i Generation II Induction Kit

Product Details
57I-9002 K&N 57i Generation II Induction Kit

Product Description

K&N 57i Generation II Induction Kits are built primarily for European vehicles. They come with K&N's Million Mile Limited Warranty. These intake kits use only non-metallic rotationally molded tubes that can reduce air temperature and decrease intake sound over a metal tube. Restriction can exist BETWEEN an air filter and the engine reducing the benefit of a K&N Air Filter alone. The weakest link in the airflow "chain" robs a vehicle of its natural horsepower. Often that weak point is the factory air path leading to the engine. K&N Air Intake Kits virtually eliminate air path restriction by replacing the air filter and the entire air path to the engine. The aerodynamically engineered tube drives a massive amount of air into an engine, which translates into POWER.

K&N HP-7009 Oil Filter

Product Details
K&N HP-7009 Oil Filter

Product Description

K&N Performance Gold® Oil Filters were originally developed for demanding auto race applications, our premium automotive oil filter is rapidly becoming a favorite among consumers for its durability and easy removal. We?ve changed oil filters and several of our product development technicians are sportsman class drag racers. They insisted we offer an oil filter that corrected the ?headaches? they experienced over the years changing oil filters. Heavy-Duty Construction for Extreme Conditions. To satisfy the demands of racers, our oil filter has many features over and above the requirements of most vehicles. We use thicker canister walls for extra strength and durability which reduces the risk of damage from loose rocks and debris. The heavy-duty construction will withstand higher oil pressures found only in racing environments without bursting. The drilled hole on the nut is for a safety wire attachment. Required for many types of racing, the safety wire prevents blown oil filters from falling on the track and representing a hazard to other race vehicles. This extra engineering offers peace of mind for consumers who want only the best.

K&N 33-2367 Replacement Air filters

Product Description

The Original High-Flow Air Filter. Since 1969 K&N Engineering has been designing, manufacturing, and enhancing High-Flow Air Filters for the automotive and motorcycle enthusiast interested in maximizing horsepower and acceleration. Since our humble beginnings we have designed and manufactured over 2,400 High-Flow Air Filters to fit most modern passenger vehicles and over 500 High-Flow Air Intake Systems to fit vehicles driven by enthusiast minded drivers. We not only have more applications than any other manufacturer of similar product, we invented the High-Flow category and the High-Flow Technology that supports it. K&N also makes thousands of racing and specialty type air filters and is the only air filter used at the Indianapolis 500 Race®. The K&N FilterCharger® air filter is designed to achieve high, virtually unrestricted air flow while maintaining filtration levels critical to ensure long engine life. Our automotive OE (original equipment) replacement air filters generally add 1-4 horsepower. The secret to our success lies in the unique characteristics of our filter medium that was originally developed by K&N all those years ago in the dust, sweat and tears of desert motocross racing. We just wanted to win races and stumbled on a cotton filtration technology destined to be great. Our high flow cotton gauze air filter is washable, reusable and built to last for the life of an automotive or motorcycle engine. K&N air filters consist of four to six sheets of cotton gauze layered between two sheets of aluminum wire mesh. This media is then pleated and oiled to enhance its filtering capabilities and overall performance. K&N Air Filters were created for an environment requiring maximum horsepower and enhanced acceleration in addition to protection from the dirt and dust of off-road racing. The result is an air filter that allows dramatically more air into an engine, is washable and reusable, and will protect your vehicle.

Customer Reviews

Solid product from a solid company.5
The filter installed with no problems, and was a solid fit. While I do not feel you receive huge gains from just the air filter, especially considering how well the stock filter flows, I do believe the K&N filter flows better. It is a great reusable, cleanable filter that will pay for itself overtime if you maintain it. As well as having great airflow. Can't beat the price either when considering any of the other after market drop in filters for the 335i. Some more technical reviews posted on e90post.com as well.
